The Government has approved the reappointment of Dr Bernard Madzima as the chief executive officer of the National AIDS Council (NAC) for a second five-year term.
Dr Madzima’s reappointment, which will run from April 14 2025 to April 13 2030, was confirmed by the National AIDS Council Board.
In an official communication from the board chairperson, Mrs Nester Mukwehwa said the reappointment was approved by President Mnangagwa in accordance with Section 17 of the Public Entities Corporate Governance Act [Chapter 10:31].
“The board placed confidence in you as recognition of your exceptional leadership and vision which have been instrumental in driving our organisation’s success,” she said.
“We look forward to your continued dedication and commitment to our mandate and mission of ending AIDS as a Public Health threat by 2030.”
Dr Madzima is expected to lead the implementation of strategic programs that aim to reduce new HIV infections, improve access to treatment, and enhance community engagement in the fight against the epidemic.
A seasoned public health expert, Dr Madzima has been at the helm of the NAC since 2020.
Under his leadership, the organisation has made significant strides in HIV prevention, treatment, and care, as well as in promoting awareness and support for people living with HIV. Of note is the attainment of the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets.
His reappointment comes at a critical time when Zimbabwe is accelerating efforts to meet global targets for HIV/AIDS elimination and achieving universal health coverage.
It also comes as the country is seeking to come up with innovative ways to mitigate the impact of the US executive order which resulted in the stoppage of most humanitarian assistance by the USAID and Pepfar.
Mrs Mukwehwa expressed confidence that Dr Madzima, working closely with the board, would contribute towards the achievement of the NAC’s mandate.
