World AIDS Campaign

World AIDS Campaign background

World AIDS Day is commemorated on 1 December each year. It is a day specifically set aside to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, call for action in the national response to HIV and AIDS and celebrate successes which have been achieved in accessing HIV and AIDS prevention and management services.
The day was first commemorated as World AIDS Day in 1988 when the World Health Organization designated it so. The day has since moved from being celebrated on a single day to a campaign which runs throughout the year.
World AIDS Campaign which includes the World AIDS Day commemorations in Zimbabwe are held under the leadership and facilitation of the National AIDS Council in a multi sectoral framework that brings together government, UN agencies, civil society, business, religious sector and AIDS service organizations.

World AIDS Campaign and Commemoration Venue

Hosting of the WAC and commemoration is done through a provincial rotational policy. Since 2000 when this policy was introduced all provinces have managed to host the event. Mashonaland East Province will host the commemoration in Chikomba District at Garwe Stadium in Chivhu.

The World AIDS Campaign Calendar
As opposed to a single day launch event and commemoration, the national strategy is to implement a national aids campaign, animated by pre and post launch activities, which all link with one another all year round. As such the calendar of events includes prelaunch, launch and post launch activities. For this year, the prelaunch will include: policy dialogues, media tours candle light memorial, schools sport activities, male circumcision campaign, HIV counselling and testing campaign and several other district and ward specific activities to mobilise and serve local communities. The AIDS week, which runs from 26 November to 01 December becomes the penultimate stage of the campaign, usually very busy with prelaunch activities.

WAC Budget

The WAC budget is a stakeholder funded budget with NAC providing funds for WAC coordination activities and WAD commemoration logistics which include catering, accommodation and transport for invited dignitaries, venue requirements ( hiring of tents, mobile toilets, public address system, security etc)
